Taking Care of Your Skin in the Summer Sun

With the change of seasons, you need to change up your routine! A little less of this (heavy lotions and moisturizers) and a little more of this (sunscreen) is the name of the game. Follow these quick tips for revamping your skin care routine for the summer.

1. Slather on the Sunscreen

The first rule in sun protection is to slather on the sunscreen. A healthy skin care routine starts with a broad spectrum of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. David Leffell, a dermatologist from the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, recommends paying particular attention to the tops of feet, ears, chest, and lips — areas that are often neglected.

2. Lighten Up Your Makeup

Try to lighten up on your makeup — just like you would your wardrobe. You don't wear a sweater in August, so why wear heavy foundation? Play with mineral powders that cover imperfections, yet absorb oils without settling into your skin.

3. Discover Oil-Reducers

High temperatures can lead to oily skin and clogged pores. For an easy fix, carry blotting tissue, or even thin napkins to dab away excess oils. After a long day in the smoldering heat, revive your skin with a face mask containing kaolin, white clay that absorbs impurities like oils, toxins and pollution. Just don't go overboard with face cleansing — if you strip your skin of natural oils too frequently, you'll send your oil glands into overdrive. A quick swab of witch hazel will do the job nicely.

4. Sunless Tanners

If you can't resist that sunkissed glow, get your tan on before you hit the beach. Beauty companies have hundreds of products that offer a radiant glow and maintain healthy skin in a variety of forms, including creams, towelettes, and lotions. If you want a flawless, full-body tan, try spray tanning at a reputable salon.

5. Don a Hat

Whether it's a wide-brimmed straw style, a canvas hat, or even a visor — a hat will keep the sun out of your face and protect wrinkle prone areas, like your forehead.

6. Grab Some Shades

The bigger the better. Not only will you shield the delicate skin around the area, you'll also keep the actual eye from future damage, like cataracts, macular degeneration, skin cancer around the eyelids, and photokeratitis. Check that the lenses have 100% UV protection.

7. Pucker Up to Lip Balm

Use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher. Since our lips are in use all the time, reapply the balm as needed or every two hours. Choose formulas with zinc oxide, but stay away from anything too glossy that will attract the sun rays.

8. Open Up an Umbrella

Umbrellas are not just for a rainy day. Umbrellas and parasols are perfect for shielding your sensitive skin from the sun. You'll be cooler and protected. No umbrella on hand? Remember to walk in the shade.

With just a few changes to your skin care routine, you can have beautiful — even sunkissed — skin this summer.
